Podcast Transcription: Metal Monday Ep. 1 - 1.4.2021

Updated: May 5

Hosts, Nick Snyder and Brett Ekart, talk about their weekend shenanigans and the scrap market prices for the week of January 4, 2021.

Nick:

Welcome everybody. Nick here from United Metals.

Brett:

Welcome to 2021, guys.

Nick:

2021, January 4th, one out of 52.

Brett:

Yep.

Nick:

And we're in the new year and the markets are pretty sideways.

Brett:

Well, they're up. You know the-

Nick:

The PGMs are up.

Brett:

Yeah. Copper is up 8 cents this morning early. I think it's come off a little bit.

Nick:

Yeah.

Brett:

You know, silver was up like a buck and a quarter at one point. Palladium was the only one lagging behind and it looks like it's down now. Platinum is up. Gold, and everything is moving along. I guess we'll kind of see how this thing goes. The stock market's getting whacked this morning, which is always interesting.

Nick:

Mm-hmm. Outlook for ferrous still on the up and up?

Brett:

Ferrous is going to be up. We're waiting on numbers, but everything is indicating it's going to be a pretty good market to sell into. We'll see what happens, but I'm anticipating a good upswing similar to December, maybe better.

Nick:

You think it will go into February?

Brett:

You know, probably depends on how much volume can get shook out of the trees this month. I mean, December was a short, shit month, generally. You know, the weather. We haven't had a crazy hard winter over here yet. We've had a little bit of snow early, but that usually means more material's going to flow if you have decent pricing and good weather. But, we haven't seen a ton of volume or extra volume. We feel like some starting. You know, you got some jobs that are starting to shake loose now, which is good.

Brett:

I would anticipate that it's going to hang around. I don't know if we're going to see another up in February, but maybe sideways-ish, I guess. But, January is a long month, so we'll see.

Nick:

All the metals, all the shredders, all that, they just don't have enough product in them right now?

Brett:

That's the way it feels like.

Nick:

Yeah, they need more material.

Brett:

The export pricing is strong because the dollar's been getting whacked. The Chinese are going to come into the market, it looks like, here this month, starting this month and probably really stronger going into February, March, which could buoy the market pretty good. All things as of right now are pointing fairly positive.

Nick:

Great. All right. Well, we promised last week we'd come to the table with a resolution. Did you think of one?

Brett:

My resolution.

Nick:

I know you're not really into them. You just like to change shit when it happens.

Brett:

Exactly. When you live and die by the minute you're just like, "All right, let's go. We're going to do it right now." It's hard to have a resolution, but I did this with my family on New Year's Eve. We do it with our kids. I said, my biggest thing is just to keep everybody in my family looking on the positive. There's so much good stuff that goes on in the world and you can't control. Just try and be as happy as you can and be as positive as you can and just try and live your day, your life, one day at a time, but in a good way.

Nick:

I think that's great to instill in your children, especially at this age, and they hopefully carry into their adulthood.

Brett:

Yeah.

Nick:

Well, good.

Brett:

How about you? Let's hear it.

Nick:

I'm going to do a go-rock in October. I'm going to hold myself accountable. I've done one before. It's in October here in Boise. The last time I did it started over by Table Rock.

Brett:

Which requires you to be in good shape.

Nick:

You got to be in really good shape. A lot better shape than I am in today.

Brett:

Well, you got some time. You got until October.

Nick:

I'm going to do it. I already signed up for it. I already paid for it. I'm going to do that. I'll keep everyone posted on my own personal page. Okay?

Brett:

All right. I like it.

Nick:

All right, thanks.

Brett:

All right, man. Take care.
